Michel Carrade's untitled artwork features parallel bands of vibrant color – red, green, blue, yellow – created using paint on what appears to be canvas. The application of the paint seems quite direct, almost like simple fields laid side by side. Look at the way the colors interact; they push and pull against each other. There's a real sense of immediacy, as if Carrade wanted the colors to speak for themselves without a lot of fuss. It’s interesting how such simple methods can carry so much weight. There is a striking lack of gesture, that requires the eye to move in order to consider the relationship between color, application and ground. The lack of material or process virtuosity throws the attention on pure perception. This directs our attention to the material qualities of the paint itself, and the way simple color relationships can create dynamism and movement, challenging traditional notions of what constitutes 'high' art.
