This is a silver games board with pieces, created by Frederik van (II) Strant in the 18th century. At just over five centimeters square, the object presents a fascinating study in miniature and material. The silvery checkerboard is formally divided into a grid of alternating squares, a binary system that speaks to larger philosophical frameworks of order and structure. The cool, metallic texture offers a tactile contrast to the intricate detailing within each square, destabilizing the very notion of uniformity it initially suggests. Light plays across the surface, highlighting the delicate craftsmanship and transforming the board from a mere playing field into a dynamic, reflective object. The pieces themselves, arranged in anticipation of a game, further complicate this interplay of order and chance. In essence, the games board is not just an object of leisure but a microcosm of the tensions between structure and agency, control and unpredictability. Its compact size belies the complex interplay of visual elements, prompting us to consider how even the most familiar forms can invite deeper contemplation.

Most 18th-century miniatures were produced by just a few Amsterdam workshops. The objects made by some of them were so detailed that they can actually be used in the same way as their full-size counterparts. This chequerboard with game pieces is a fine example. The board has the 64 squares customary in the 18th century, rather than the present-day 100.
