This anonymous artwork from c. 1811-1815 is a fine example of a gingham gown, a popular garment of the early 19th century. The gown is made of a lightweight cotton fabric with a checkered pattern, common for the time. The gown is on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and its design is representative of the simple yet elegant styles favored by women in this era. This gown, with its modest silhouette and subtle details, offers a glimpse into the fashion and textile trends of the early 1800s.
Comments
Although fairly plain, this chequered cotton gown is nevertheless lavishly decorated. Around the neck and cuffs are gathered strips of fabric and twisted cotton cords. The skirt consists of four broad panels, each with a drawstring inside a narrow casing. This dress was supposedly worn by the wife of a mayor in Zeeland during Napoleon’s lightening visit to this province in 1811.
