Douglas Abdell made ‘Yad’ out of wood, paint, and metal, piecing together different material elements. I can imagine him in his studio, figuring it out step by step, moving things around. There’s an ambiguity at play here. It could be a machine, or a strange animal standing on those two legs. The object has a black cylindrical body, which emerges from a rectangular structure, and a lever sticking up, like it's waiting to be pulled. And did you see the white circle with the black line? It’s like a closed eye! I feel an affinity with Abdell. We are both invested in exploring the relationship between form, material, and meaning. I wonder, what kind of conversations he was having with other artists at the time? I hope that Abdell's sculpture can act as a mirror, encouraging you to explore your own creative instincts. Art invites us to embrace uncertainty, ambiguity, and multiple perspectives. What does it make you think of?
