Francesco Hayez painted 'The Sicilian Vespers' in oil on canvas, sometime in the mid-nineteenth century. It depicts a key moment in the history of Italian nationalism. The painting illustrates the 1282 uprising against the French rulers of Sicily. Hayez made this painting during the Risorgimento when national identity and independence were hotly debated issues. The drama of the scene and the artist’s focus on the emotional intensity of the figures create a stirring image of national unity against foreign oppression. Through its theatrical composition and historical subject matter, the painting implicitly critiques the contemporary political situation in Italy, which was then divided into several states, many of which were under foreign control. To truly understand this painting, one must consult historical sources that shed light on the political and cultural context in which it was produced. Art history teaches us that the meaning of art is always contingent on its social and institutional setting.
