Here are a couple of pages, Alf Petersens gloser og bemærkninger til Atta Troll, from a notebook by Niels Larsen Stevns. I imagine Niels sitting in his studio, mulling over a text, copying out phrases. This is the act of a working artist: always reading, writing, looking, thinking, and searching for inspiration. The sepia tone of the notebook gives a warm glow to the page. His handwriting is loose and flowing. He almost seems to be sketching with words, like Cy Twombly, except instead of poems he has all these notes. I am sure he wasn't thinking about how the act of writing something down is a form of drawing. I love the way artists collect and collate, and how one thing leads to another. These notes are not the finished painting but an important step on the journey. It reminds me of the importance of process and the meandering path of creativity.
