Carmen Delaco created "Aurora II" using a range of gestural marks and textural layers to suggest a corporeal form emerging from a raw, undefined space. The composition is dominated by soft, fleshy tones and layered pigments of pinks, purples, and browns. Notice how Delaco employs a restricted palette to create a sense of depth and volume. The forms, only verging on representation, seem to coalesce from an indeterminate ground. The artist’s application of paint, characterized by visible brushstrokes and a tactile surface, emphasizes the materiality of the work. This reminds us that we are looking at paint on canvas. The title "Aurora," suggests a dawn-like emergence. What is emerging here could be a new form of representation or perhaps a challenge to the traditional art historical representation of the body. This painting may be read through the lens of post-structuralist thought, challenging fixed meanings and exploring the fluid nature of identity and form. It destabilizes established categories and offers a space for ongoing interpretation.
