Sol LeWitt made this triptych, Irregular Arcs, Bands, Loops, with bright colours arranged in three panels, it's very cool. This really spells out art-making as a process, as a set of decisions, and how these all add up. The colours are so crisp and flat. They create movement, rhythm, and energy, even though there is nothing represented at all. It's just color and line, and shape, that’s it. Look at that grey; it’s used in each of the three panels, like a pause in a song. In the panel to the left, the grey sits on top as the first 'wave' of colour, creating an atmosphere. In the middle, the gray grounds the lines, making them feel solid and present. On the right, the grey works as the starting point for the rest of the arcs. LeWitt reminds me of Agnes Martin, who also embraced simple, repetitive gestures, and basic forms. Both artists see their work as a system, not unlike musical compositions, which embrace ambiguity and multiple interpretations over fixed meanings.
