This button was made by the Wedgwood Manufactory, using jasperware, metal, and diamonds. The distinctive appearance of this button hinges on the jasperware, an unglazed stoneware famed for its matte finish and pastel colors, often ornamented with neo-classical motifs. To achieve this effect, Josiah Wedgwood experimented extensively with different clay mixtures, and the final result gives the effect of carved gemstone, but at a fraction of the cost. This opened up new possibilities for fashionable consumers. Instead of commissioning a cameo from a specialist, they could now acquire a Wedgwood product that emulated the look. The contrast of the white figure against the blue background accentuates the crispness of the design, while the diamond embellishment adds a touch of luxury. Wedgwood was one of the first to grasp the industrial potential of ceramics. His factory was highly efficient, yet he also made sure that his products were associated with the high aesthetic standards of the era, bridging the gap between industry and artistry.
