Niels Larsen Stevns created this sketch on paper, presenting a series of figure studies. The composition is immediately striking: we see multiple sketches layered on the page. The use of line is economical, yet descriptive, capturing the essence of each figure with minimal strokes. There’s a certain structural quality to how Stevns arranges these figures. The repetition and variation create a visual rhythm, inviting us to consider how each figure relates to the others in form and space. It reminds one of Saussure’s theory of language as a system of signs. Here, each sketch is a signifier, gaining meaning through its relation to the others within the structured space of the page. Consider the background of the squared paper itself. It acts as a grid, subtly imposing order on the apparent spontaneity of the sketches. This tension between freedom and constraint is what I find fascinating, highlighting how form and structure can shape our perception and understanding. It prompts us to see beyond the figures themselves, into the underlying structures of representation.
