Editor: Hmm, it does seem like the light emphasizes certain faces, pulling them forward while others recede into the shadows. Like the figures in the very front seem clearer and lighter than the ones further back. What's the effect of that range of tones? Curator: The range from highlight to shadow is key here. Observe the tonal gradations: they delineate the subjects while emphasizing the spatial depth of the composition. Consider too the repetition of shapes: the rounded heads and the rectilinear geometry of the furniture create a visually unified and hierarchically structured pictorial space.
