Axel Hou made this Christmas and New Year card with ink on paper. I am thinking about the hand that made this, and the light in the space where they worked. The linear marks build up and cross over like musical notation. A rhythm happens. The three wise men in their cloaks, and Mary, head bowed, holding the baby. I like the radiating lines of light which illuminate the scene. A single gesture like that can communicate a feeling, an intention. It’s like the artist is saying, look here! You can see that Hou looked at other prints by artists such as Emil Nolde. Artists are constantly in conversation, inspiring each other's creativity. In art, that is what keeps things moving. Hou opens a space of imagination. It embraces ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations and meaning.
