"Aanbidding door de koningen", or "Adoration of the Kings", was created by Claude Vignon, sometime between 1593 and 1670, using etching techniques. The image captures a classical biblical scene. The composition seems to be influenced by the social and political history of 17th century France. The traditional imagery of adoration is complicated by the looming figure on the right. Wrapped in shadow and regal attire, the figure may represent a veiled reference to the opulence and power of the French monarchy, set against the humble scene. The piece invites us to consider how displays of reverence are often entangled with earthly power structures. How do the earthly manifestations of power echo, or perhaps distort, the act of reverence? This piece offers no answers, only a meditation on the complexities of faith, power, and representation.
