Martino Rota created this engraving, "Christ Appears to Peter at the Gates of Rome," in the late 16th century, a period defined by religious reformation and conflict across Europe. Here, we see Peter kneeling before Christ, who is depicted outside the gates of Rome carrying a cross-topped flag. The story tells of Peter fleeing persecution in Rome, only to encounter Christ heading towards the city. Peter asks, "Lord, where are you going?" To which Christ replies that he is going to Rome to be crucified again. Peter, ashamed, returns to face his fate. Rota’s work invites us to consider the themes of leadership, sacrifice, and the personal struggles that can arise when one’s beliefs are tested. The emotional weight of Peter’s decision to turn back underscores the intense personal and communal dimensions of faith during this tumultuous era. The print prompts us to reflect on the cost of conviction, and the courage required to confront adversity.
