Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this plate to celebrate a 25th wedding anniversary; it's a lovely thing, made with paint on earthenware. I love how the concentric circles and radiating lines divide the space into these little geometric fields. It’s clear that the making of this, like all art-making, is a process of decision-making and responding to materials. What really grabs me is the way the colours play with each other; how the solid green and gold create this visual dance of positive and negative space. Notice the area around the date, how the dark numerals almost blend into the background, and then pop out at you, a visual hide-and-seek. The brushstrokes are so clear, you can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the surface, each stroke deliberate and precise. It reminds me of Hilma af Klint's early explorations of geometric abstraction. Like Klint, Cachet seems to be reaching for something beyond the purely representational. Ultimately, art is about this ongoing conversation, the exchange of ideas across time and space. It’s all about embracing ambiguity.
