Editor: Perhaps it is a reflection on the limited opportunities afforded to certain demographics? A type of imposed paralysis stemming from circumstance? Curator: Exactly! The realism movement, in which Legros worked, often sought to portray marginalized figures. His choice of etching—with its capacity for conveying granular detail—emphasizes the subject’s lived experience, reflecting perhaps the hardships and inequities faced by elderly individuals. How do the lines, the hatching, reinforce this feeling? Editor: The starkness of the etching and the use of shadows add a certain drama.
