This 16th-century engraving by Virgil Solis depicts a nude female figure, likely representing the Roman goddess Diana, the goddess of the hunt. She stands in a landscape holding a bow and arrow, her drapery billowing behind her. The figure is framed by an ornate oval, which is further embellished with decorative motifs and small scenes, such as a crayfish and a compass. This work exemplifies the detailed style of ornamentation popular in Renaissance art, particularly in Germany. Solis was a prolific artist who produced numerous engravings, often depicting classical subjects and mythological scenes. This work, like many of his others, was intended for use as a model for decorative arts, such as jewelry or metalwork.
