Curatorial notes

This is a photograph of the Bouregreg River near Rabat, captured by A.G.A. van Eelde. It’s a moody image, like a memory fading at the edges. Look at the texture of the wall in the foreground, how it grounds the image, all rough and solid, against the hazy distance. I wonder if the artist paused there for a moment to admire the view? The real action’s happening in the tonal range, though. See how the light plays across the water, picking out the boats and buildings? It's soft, subtle, yet still manages to create a sense of depth. The whole thing feels so immediate, like a quick sketch, capturing a fleeting moment. It reminds me a little of Atget, just capturing a piece of time and space. Ultimately, this photograph isn’t about perfection, but about the lived experience. It's a reminder that art doesn't always need to shout to be heard; sometimes, the quietest voices resonate the loudest.
