Editor: Here we have "Gezicht op het strand van Marina Grande," a gelatin silver print by Norbert van den Berg, taken sometime between 1940 and 1950. I’m immediately struck by the contrast; the dark, looming hillside against the almost stark, sun-drenched beach. What catches your eye? Curator: You know, it feels like stepping back in time, doesn’t it? That grainy texture of the gelatin silver print adds to the sense of nostalgia, like an old postcard found in the attic. I’m drawn to the everyday life captured, the bustle of people and boats. The seemingly casual composition reminds me of street photography - that candid observation. Do you get the impression of a specific story being told, or is it more of a mood piece for you? Editor: I think it's more the mood. The slightly elevated perspective, combined with the monochrome, flattens the scene, and invites me to observe a timeless vacation. But street photography in landscape seems a bit contradictory. Curator: It does seem paradoxical at first, doesn't it? Think about the "decisive moment" of street photography transposed onto a wider view, almost an ironic juxtaposition of human life within a grandiose nature scene. What do you imagine life was like for these people in that moment? Editor: They're vacationing...escaping maybe something like World War II or something related. So much going on those years. Curator: Exactly! Now, that makes the picture deeper. What started as a quick sunny scape reveals new shades. I love that pictures have their ways to keep stories and reveal them to observant eyes.
