Editor: Rodolfo Arico’s 1966 "Untitled" oil painting is quite captivating. It's minimalist, almost monastic, in its deep blue hue and the arch shape it creates. I’m drawn to its quiet, contemplative nature. What do you make of this piece? Curator: It whispers to me, doesn’t shout. That monochrome invites intimacy, wouldn't you say? I find myself lost in the texture, those subtle variations in the blue oil paint. It reminds me of looking up at the night sky, searching for constellations, you know? Abstract Expressionism often played with the emotive power of colour itself. Do you feel a particular emotion gazing at this 'blue monochrome'? Editor: I feel a sense of calm, but also a little bit of melancholy. The blue almost feels infinite. Does the shape – this rounded rectangle - hold any symbolic weight for you? Curator: Oh, absolutely! Arches have such history, right? From doorways to windows in sacred spaces, always framing something beyond, something… other. Think about Rothko's chapel, playing on sacred themes. Arico maybe is pushing us to look inward through abstraction. I wonder what Arico might have been contemplating during 1966 in Italy. That historical setting can certainly enhance our observation! Don’t you agree? Editor: That makes me appreciate the piece even more. Thinking about it in terms of doorways and perspective changes everything. I hadn't considered that! Curator: That's the magic of art, isn't it? The constant unveiling, the shifting perspectives. It is an endless conversation through time, and Arico offers us a moment to participate and reflect upon the meaning and role that ‘blue’ may have for all of us!
