This photograph shows the Sint-Martinuskerk in Halsteren. The image uses a limited tonal range, with soft gradations of light that create a dream-like effect, lending the solid brickwork a surprisingly ethereal quality. The surface of the photograph has a slight sheen, almost like a whisper, and the level of detail is exquisite. The brickwork and the textures of the surrounding stone are so well captured. And the heavy iron fence that surrounds the church adds a strange feeling of both protection and enclosure. Look closely at the way the photographer captured the light as it glances off the slate roof. There's a balance between the documentary aspect and a softer, more intuitive way of seeing. It reminds me a little of some of the architectural studies of Bernd and Hilla Becher, although without their deadpan aesthetic. Both approaches highlight how photography can transform the mundane into something quite extraordinary. Ultimately, this image speaks to the subjective nature of all artistic endeavors.
