This photograph of the Sint-Lambertuskerk in Huisseling was made anonymously, at an unknown date, as a record for Monumentenzorg, or heritage preservation. There's a muted quality to the palette, almost monochromatic, which gives it a sense of distance. It reminds me of Gerhard Richter's blurry photos that are paintings. The graininess of the image enhances the soft textures and muted colors, which I really like. I find my eyes drawn to the base of the building, where a low brick wall cuts across the frame. It's a grounding element that anchors the church, which then rises up towards the sky. In many ways, the photograph is the most solid thing in this image, since everything is captured in a state of gentle decay. Photography can often embrace ambiguity. It's as much about what's there as what isn't, what we see as what we imagine.
