Dimensions overall (second dimension is diameter): 12 x 11.5 cm (4 3/4 x 4 1/2 in.)

This hand bell was made by Gaetano Albertazi, sometime between 1450 and 1525, and it is made of bronze. The form is achieved through metal casting: molten bronze would have been poured into a mold, carefully designed to capture the bell's shape and decorative details. This was no simple process. The quality of the bronze itself matters. Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, and its sonic properties are highly dependent on the precise mixture of those metals. Albertazi would have needed to have expert knowledge of metallurgy. Also, consider the labor involved. From mining the ore, to smelting, alloying, and the skilled work of casting, this bell embodies a complex web of human effort. The inscription around the bell suggests it may have been made in Milan, a center of metalworking at the time. Whether rung in a church, or perhaps used to announce the arrival of a dignitary, this bell connects us to the sounds and social rituals of the Renaissance. Appreciating the skill and labor that went into its creation allows us to understand it as more than just a functional object, but as a testament to human ingenuity and collaboration.
