This albumen print, taken by Étienne Neurdein, captures the port of Dinan with a striking bridge in the background. Bridges, throughout history, have acted as more than mere crossings; they are potent symbols of connection, transition, and aspiration. Consider the Ponte Vecchio in Florence, or even the ancient Roman aqueducts – these structures transcend simple utility. In Dinan, the bridge's arches reflect in the water below, creating an Ouroboros effect, where the image seems to swallow its own tail. This cyclical motif speaks to a timeless human drive to bridge divides, not only across physical spaces, but also between eras and ideas. The bridge has reappeared and evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts, reflecting the ceaseless, cyclical progression of human endeavor.
