This Untitled work was made by Jeremy Moon at an unknown date using paint on canvas. The colors are bold, but not brash: a kind of creamy yellow, pale pink, bright white and velvety black. There's something quite graphic and instantaneous about it, despite the fact it's made from paint, which is slow. Look how the yellow has this real weight to it, but it is pushed back, as if the white is more forward. The surface has these gentle variations, too, which lend it a sense of light, and of course the black adds something quite different; the painting is full of these kinds of spatial ambiguities that keep it moving. The layering is really compelling. You can almost sense the hand of the artist working and reworking the canvas, trying to find a place where all of these elements might come together. Moon reminds me a little of someone like Kenneth Noland, in the way he uses color to explore space. It’s a nice reminder that art is a conversation. It doesn't have to give you all the answers, just be interesting.
