Brice Marden made this ink drawing on paper, and looking at all the little marks, it seems like the artmaking process was almost like a dance. The surface of this drawing is so interesting. You can see the texture of the paper, and the ink sits right on top, almost like it's floating. The color is muted, almost like a memory. I like how some of the marks are dark and bold, while others are light and delicate, and there's something really nice about the contrast between the controlled lines and the accidental splatters. Take the mark at the bottom left, it's kind of awkward and clumsy, but it's also full of energy. It's like Marden was trying to capture a feeling or a thought without being too precise. This reminds me a bit of Cy Twombly's work. Both artists were interested in mark-making and gesture, and they both had a way of creating images that feel both ancient and modern. It shows art as an ongoing conversation.
