This design for a stained-glass window with flowers, fruit, and even snails, was made anonymously, and at no precisely known date. There's something so charming and unassuming about the fact that we don't know who made it. The palette here is pastel, almost chalky, and there's a tentative quality to the line, like the artist is feeling their way forward. Look at the bottom of the design: there's a little swirl there, a kind of snail-like spiral, that seems to echo the snails dotted elsewhere, and it really sings. It's like the artist is saying, "I'm here, I'm present, I'm part of this design." It reminds me of the work of Hilma af Klint, another artist who worked in relative obscurity, exploring similar themes of nature and spirituality. It makes you wonder about all the other anonymous artists out there, quietly making beautiful things, and reminding us that art is about so much more than fame or recognition.
