Nicolaas Box created this Italian coastal landscape using graphite and possibly some watercolor. It’s a subtle work, seemingly dashed off in the open air. Look closely, and you’ll see the artist has really exploited the qualities of graphite – its capacity for finely graded tone, and for capturing surfaces with just a few strokes. From the crumbling buildings on the left to the distant sails on the water, Box coaxes depth and texture out of his medium. He would have needed a sharp eye to observe the way light falls on the stucco, brick, and stone. The quick, assured handling suggests a confidence born of long practice. It’s a virtuoso performance, but also, like many landscapes, it is an expression of social status. The view of the Italian seaside, which Box likely visited on the Grand Tour, spoke of wealth, leisure, and cultural sophistication. It is not just an image, but an assertion of social identity.
