This is a portrait of an unknown nobleman by Gerard Valck, made around the turn of the 18th century. The oval composition focuses our attention sharply on the figure, rendered in tones of sepia ink that give a sense of depth. Note how the symmetry of the face is framed by the elaborate curls of the wig. This is offset by the figure being slightly turned to the side, bringing a sense of movement to the image. The artist’s structural use of light and shadow, from the stark highlights on the armour to the subtle gradations on the face, does more than depict – it constructs an image of power. It's interesting to consider how this work invites the viewer to question the relationship between the subject's internal character and external presentation. The formal qualities of the artwork, through their very construction, encourage us to look beyond simple representation and engage with deeper questions.
