Jean Cocteau created this mural in the Chapelle Saint Blaise, and honey, you can tell this wasn't just another day at the office for him! Imagine Cocteau up there, on scaffolding maybe, laying down these contours with a brush full of dark paint, probably in one take. See how the lines defining the face are so clear, almost severe, against the soft, washy background? It's as if he's carving out the soul of the figure with each stroke. And those eyes, gazing upwards, they're so full of yearning, right? I wonder if Cocteau felt like he was communing with something bigger than himself while painting this. I like to think that artists through time are all in some kind of conversation like that, shouting out their ideas in paint, inspiring each other. I love how painting embraces doubt, chance, and multiple readings. It's not about answers, more like keeping the questions alive.
