This still life was made by Romanian artist Ion Pacea using oil on cardboard. At first glance, the painting may appear rudimentary, as the shapes are simplistic, and the outlines are quite stark. However, upon closer inspection, the textures are far from flat. Pacea used the inherent qualities of oil paint to its full potential, mixing and layering to add depth to the image. From the rough, matte surface of the background, to the hard edges of the central objects, each area reveals a different approach to handling the material. The result of these processes isn’t just visual, it’s tactile too. We get the sense that the artist handled the paint very deliberately, exploring all its possibilities, moving between soft brushwork and confident, deliberate marks. By understanding the materials and the making, we can appreciate Pacea's exploration of the medium and his craft.
