Editor: Here we have Paul Feiler's "Vertical Reflections, Blue," an oil on canvas. The composition feels both rigid and organic, with geometric forms softened by the textured paint. What do you notice about the way Feiler uses form and space in this work? Curator: The interplay between the vertical and circular forms is compelling. The vertical elements provide a structural framework, while the circle introduces a sense of dynamism. Note the textured impasto; how does it affect your perception of the composition? Editor: It adds a tactile dimension, almost like viewing a landscape through frosted glass. Does this textural element suggest any meaning to you? Curator: The materiality invites a reading of the painting as an object in itself, not simply a representation. It prompts us to consider the physical properties of the paint and canvas, creating a self-referential loop. Editor: That's fascinating – focusing on the artwork as an object rather than solely its representational qualities. Curator: Precisely. Examining the formal elements reveals a complex dialogue between structure and surface.

While maintaining his characteristically cool and modulated colouring, Vertical Reflections, Blue comes from a group of works in which Feiler explored the working environment of the studio. The abstracted forms ultimately derive from familiar studio items such as stretchers, easels and mirrors. These elements are overlaid and interlocked to form a structured composition.
