This print on paper, “Très Parisien 1923 No 1: Tissus de Diederichs - Soieries”, was made by an anonymous artist. Look at the pinks and yellows, the blacks and creams, the neat blocks of colour that make up the dresses. I can imagine the artist carefully, tenderly painting this, the joy they must have taken in the colours, in these modern forms of dresses. I'd love to know what it was like to live then, to wear such things! I can feel the artist, whoever they were, finding their way through this medium, figuring out how to use colour and form to capture this fashion of the time. The print work is clean and crisp, allowing for the intricate details of the dresses to come through. This work sparks something in me, a wish to capture the feeling of a historical period. It makes me think about other fashion illustrators, those artists who were capturing the cutting edge of their day. It is so exciting when artists can carry on the conversation, building on the insights and discoveries of those who came before.
