Delizy made this small photograph, “Gezicht op Le Puy-en-Velay,” and even though we don’t know when, its tones and the way the image is composed really make you feel the texture of time. The way the light falls on the buildings stacked up the hill gives it all a powdery, ethereal glow. The details are soft, not sharp, more like a memory than a crisp snapshot. It is almost like looking at a very faint drawing, the tones and surfaces all melding together. Look at how the light just barely touches the roofs; it’s like a whisper, a quiet acknowledgment of the world's presence. It reminds me of the landscapes of Corot, who found a similar subtle beauty in humble scenes. Both artists seem to invite us to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the understated poetry all around.
