Curator: Tim Head’s large-scale work, “Deep Freeze,” presents a compelling visual field. The Tate collection piece uses simplified forms and stark contrasts. What's your initial reaction? Editor: It strikes me as quite unsettling. The juxtaposition of the icy blue outline and the dense black shapes evokes a feeling of cold isolation. There's an almost clinical detachment. Curator: It’s interesting that you mention clinical detachment, because Head was interested in exploring the impact of technology on human perception. He made use of photography and early digital tools when designing this piece. Editor: The high contrast and simple forms certainly suggest a mechanically reproduced image. And the title hints at the chilling effect of technology and mass production on society. Curator: Indeed. I think, beyond the initial chill, there is a certain playful abstraction. The forms, though suggestive, remain ambiguous, inviting the viewer to engage in a visual game. Editor: Perhaps a game, but one played on a sterile field. Seeing it through the lens of formal contrast and stark color choices, it’s hard not to see Head’s concerns about detachment. Curator: Well, I will say, looking at the means of its making and production alongside the imagery, helps to expand my understanding of the artist's intentions. Editor: And examining the icy visual qualities emphasizes the themes of isolation. A complex and impactful work.

The patterns in this work are derived from frozen cuts of meat but also from sections through brains and chromosome diagrams. This is one of a series of works in which Head dealt with man's intervention in the natural environment through, for example, genetic engineering and corporate advertising. Head was commenting on the way daily life is made acceptable by packaging and presentation. What interested him was the way an image could be simplified so that, while instantly recognisable as a piece of meat, it bore little relationship to the original. The colours and the title of the paintings allude to frozen products. Head also commented that he found the process of contemporary food production 'quite chilling'. Gallery label, September 2004
