"According to the Laws of Chance" by Jean Arp, permanently installed at the Tate Modern, seems to have come into being through, well, chance. I like to imagine Arp, perhaps in a moment of playful rebellion against the idea of complete control, dropping pieces of paper onto a surface and then fixing them where they landed. It's a way of relinquishing some control to the universe, letting the chips fall where they may, then using those forms as a starting point. The blobs are cool, they give off an organic kind of vibe. The shapes almost look like they could be microscopic organisms. I think of Kurt Schwitters and his collages and experiments with found objects and letting randomness play a role. It is a kind of conversation across time, isn’t it? We all keep getting inspired by each other. Ultimately, works like this remind us that art doesn't always have to be about a fixed meaning, but can be about embracing uncertainty and opening ourselves up to new ways of seeing and experiencing the world.
