The Spiraling (Effect) of the Fundamental Law on the Fearful Party (Russians) 1904
Dimensions 14 1/2 x 9 7/8 in. (36.8 x 25.1 cm)
Kobayashi Kiyochika made this print, “The Spiraling (Effect) of the Fundamental Law on the Fearful Party (Russians),” with woodblock. Looking at it, I can almost feel the artist carving away at the block, carefully registering each color to create this image. Imagine Kiyochika with his chisels and knives, working to bring these figures to life. There's this character with a huge, bulging form, and a stern, seated figure with a double-headed eagle crest. I wonder, what was going through Kiyochika's mind as he rendered each line? Was he thinking about the way fear can balloon and distort, or the weight of authority? The image reminds me a bit of Daumier's political cartoons. I appreciate how artists, through their unique vision, can distill complex emotions and ideas into something so immediate. These prints continue to speak to us about power, fear, and the human condition.
