This is a design for a carpet of unknown date, made by an anonymous artist. The all-over composition, rendered in tiny, precise marks, feels intensely considered. This is a world created through deliberate construction, each decision building on the last, which gives the piece a feeling of inevitability. I’m drawn to the limited palette of reds, blues, greens, and tans. The density of the pattern makes it hard to know where to focus, as if each corner might reveal a new insight into the whole. It feels both intricate and immediate. The whole field vibrates, but if I had to pick a single area, it would be the lozenge pattern on the bottom. It anchors the piece, but it also feels like a key to unlocking the rest. This image reminds me of Hilma af Klint’s diagrammatic paintings – the feeling of a secret language or a map of the psyche. Like her work, it refuses to settle on one single meaning, inviting us to get lost in its complexities.
