This imposing cabinet was made in the Netherlands, and from oak – a timber so strong and dependable, it has long been associated with steadfast governance. Look closely, and you’ll see just how cleverly the maker has maximized the use of this material. The carcase is constructed from planks, joined by mortise-and-tenon, while the door panels are thinner, lighter boards. There is a real contrast between the smooth geometry of the doors on the right, and the many drawers on the left, each equipped with delicate ring pulls. The cabinet was clearly intended for serious business, a place where important papers could be filed away for easy access. But it’s also a tour-de-force of woodworking skill. The anonymous maker demonstrates a mastery of the material, elevating a functional object to a level of visual sophistication. It reminds us that even the most pragmatic designs can be opportunities for creative expression, and lasting beauty.
