This photographic contact sheet by Robert Frank shows a series of images for the "Harper's Bazaar" magazine, featuring Saul Steinberg in bed. I can imagine Frank, the photographer, circling the best shots with a grease pencil, or something. Each frame feels like a little drawing; a kind of intimate, sequential portrait of Steinberg in his private space, maybe early in the morning, the light just coming in. It must have been intriguing to be a fly on the wall, watching these two artists collaborate, or just hang out. Steinberg looks so nonchalant, like, “Okay, here I am in bed, now what?” Maybe Frank was thinking about how to capture the essence of Steinberg’s wit and thoughtfulness through these images. They feel casual but deliberate, like a sketch in a notebook. This image makes me think about how artists are always looking at each other, finding ways to translate experiences into something new. It's that feeling of being in good company, bouncing ideas off each other.
