This is Robert Frank’s ‘Embarkation 7’, a contact sheet most likely made in the mid-20th century using black and white photography. Look at how the light falls! I can imagine Frank in the darkroom, coaxing these images out of the chemical bath, each one a little window into a world bustling with people and machines. I wonder what he was thinking as he framed these shots, probably wanting to capture the in-between moments, the hurried gestures and glances of workers as they prepared for a journey, maybe the start of a long sea voyage. He’s like a shadow, documenting the real stuff of life as it unfolds. There is an urgency in the composition and the way he has printed it, not precious, but somehow full of feeling. The images remind me of other photographers, like Henri Cartier-Bresson, who was also trying to capture the decisive moment, where form and content collide in a perfect synthesis. Photography, like painting, is a constant process of observation and intuition.
