Robert Frank’s photographic contact sheet, 'From the bus 53', gives us a look into the artist's working process. The monochromatic tones here, the deep blacks and nuanced grays, aren't just about recording an image; they're about feeling. There’s a tactile quality to these frames, a sense of peering directly into Frank's mind as he navigates the city. Each image is a raw, unfiltered slice of life, capturing fleeting moments with a kind of tender brutality. I'm drawn to the strip showing the interior of a bar. The textures seem to almost drip off the photograph with a melancholic light. The reflections on the glass, the worn surfaces, it all speaks to a reality that's both gritty and beautiful. Like Garry Winogrand, Frank had an appetite for the chaotic poetry of everyday life. Both artists encourage us to find beauty in the ephemeral and often overlooked details of the world around us. What we are left with is a feeling, a fleeting moment of connection.
