Miep de Feijter designed this book cover with ink and graphite in 1937, and immediately it reminded me of cartooning, where every line counts. The design has that amazing graphic sensibility you see in Dutch design, playing with the tension between flat shapes and suggested depth. Look at the thick, bold lines that define the kids and the lettering, and then the open, airy spaces around them. I imagine Miep de Feijter working with a real love for storytelling, maybe she would draw with her non-dominant hand to get those raw edges. The materiality of ink is so present here, you can almost smell it, and the graphite adds a layer of softness to the bold ink work. It's like she’s inviting us into a secret world, a story waiting to be told. This piece feels very current to me, it’s a fresh reminder that artists and designers are constantly in dialogue across time, exchanging ideas and inspiring one another. And it reminds me that art making embraces uncertainty, allowing for so many interpretations.
