Sol LeWitt’s, Two Centimeter Wavy Bands in Colors, is a rainbow riot of lines on paper. I'm guessing it’s gouache or maybe watercolor. I love to imagine LeWitt in his studio, plotting the exact width of each band. There's a real sense of order, but also a kind of playful spontaneity as the lines arc and curve across the square. That blue line singing against the red. It makes me think about what it means to create a system, and then let loose within it. Each color choice—the deep reds, the olive greens, the bright yellows—feels like a decision, a tiny rebellion against the grid. Look at the way the lines wiggle ever so slightly, hinting at the human hand behind the seemingly perfect geometry. It’s a constant back and forth between rule and chance. Artists are always talking to each other, right? LeWitt's play with color and geometry is a reminder of how painting can be both a precise science and a total mystery.
