Twins Seven Seven made this drawing, Midnight Drawing in My Mind #2, probably with ink or paint marker, but it feels like a wandering stream of consciousness. Imagine him conjuring this creature or spirit out of the darkness. The shapes are so alive, like a hallucination—or maybe a dream just before waking. I think he starts with the black background and then lets the design bubble up through trial, error, and intuition. He’s got these floating, rounded shapes, almost like cells or organisms, with the strangest colors. A limited palette of blacks, whites, reds, and blues, all vibrating against each other! It feels really personal, like he’s letting us into his own head. You can see how he’s riffing on traditions of Yoruban art but making something totally new. Artists are always talking to each other across time, across cultures, you know? I can imagine myself having a conversation with Twins Seven Seven, we're both trying to make sense of the world, one gesture at a time.
