Niels Truslew created this image of a Danish naval ship using etching and watercolor. Look closely and you'll see the effect of the etching process. The fine, precise lines of the ship's rigging and hull were first scratched into a metal plate, inked, and then printed onto paper. The artist then added watercolor to bring the scene to life. The etching and watercolor process speaks to the intersection of craft and industry. The printmaking enabled multiple images to be made, but the hand-applied color ensures each is unique. It's a blend of mechanical reproduction and individual artistry. The image itself reminds us of the labor involved in maritime trade and naval power, both essential aspects of Denmark's economy and global reach during Truslew's time. So, when we look at this image, we see not just a ship, but a moment in the history of materials, making, and the wider world.
