Biography
Jean Cousin the Younger was a French artist who was active in the 16th century. He was known for his drawings and engravings, which often depicted religious subjects. He was also a skilled painter, but his paintings are less well-known than his drawings and prints. The visual qualities of his art are known for their detailed, fine lines and meticulous hatching, with careful attention paid to light and shadow. One of his famous works is a drawing titled “The Virgin and Child Surrounded by Angels” which depicts the mother and son surrounded by a host of cherubs. It’s clear Cousin was a skilled draftsman, and his use of hatching to create depth and volume in his figures is impressive. He was also a skilled designer and was known for his work on stained glass windows, like the design in the image "Stained Glass Window Design for the Story of Judith."
