Biography
Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley (1545-1567), was the King Consort of Scotland from 1565 to 1567. He is most famously known for his turbulent marriage to Mary, Queen of Scots. The image shows a woodcut portrait of Darnley, which was likely created shortly after his death. The engraving depicts Darnley in a formal pose, wearing elaborate clothing with a ruff collar and a feathered cap. The inscription in Dutch around the oval portrait reads "Henry Lord of Darnley, King of Scotland." This portrait likely served as a visual testament to Darnley's status and importance in the annals of Scottish history.
