Biography
Claude Fonteyne was a Dutch engraver who is most known for his work depicting the Thirty Years' War. The example shown here is a broadside memorial to Ernest Casimir, a prominent figure of the war. As was common in the 17th century, the broadside contains not only a visual element, but also a lengthy inscription that records a biographical account of Casimir. The image itself is engraved in a decorative style, with a central portrait of Casimir within an elaborate frame. The inclusion of a coat of arms and numerous crests adds to the detail and splendor of this memorial print.
