Lech Jankowski made ‘Ostatnia ucieczka grzebieni’ or ‘The Last Escape of Combs’, a painting with no date, using a heavily textured surface and muted palette. The color feels like earth, and the black marks read as writing, or traces of something long past. The painting’s surface is built up with layers, creating a relief-like effect. You can almost feel the gritty texture, a mix of browns, grays, and creams. The paint is thick in places, thin in others, revealing the process of layering, scraping, and building. The dark markings on the surface contrast with their simple, geometric form to the textured ground they sit on. They almost look like a comb dragged through wet paint, but maybe that’s just me and the title! These marks scatter and scatter like the last remains of something, like Cy Twombly’s scrawls, or cave paintings. Jankowski reminds us that art is a conversation across time, always reaching back and forward. There’s no right answer, just an invitation to look, feel, and maybe even get a little lost.
